Abstract:

This article explores an embodied, affective, and situated methodology, which was developed during my PhD at the Institute for Latin American Thinking and Culture (Instituto de Pensamiento y Cultura en América Latina –Ipecal) through research work with little boys, girls, and teenagers at Los Mártires district (Bogotá, Colombia). To technocratic rationality and authoritarian devices shaping scholarly production, we oppose a runaway methodological approach drawing from reassuring positioning, didactobiography, listening circles, and clinical-critical listening. Drawing upon these practices, the hazy banishment category emerged, stemming from urban childhood, detached from previous theoretical frameworks. This methodology is an act of epistemic disobedience and critical practice challenging traditional hierarchies, putting the expert’s authority off center, acknowledging affectivity as legitimate knowledge, and leaving room for building categories based on lived experience. In this article, we analyze emotional stress informing children’s urban living, and we advance a rogue methodology to study childhood drawing upon autonomy, emotional engagement, and attentive listening.

Keywords: runaway methodologies, epistemic disobedience, urban childhoods, hazy banishment, situated research, affectivity and territory.
