Abstract:

This article suggests an alternative hypothesis for the interpretation of the construction of the Latin American Conservative Parties to the theories of the core constituencies. To this end, in the first part we will discuss three authors – Corblit, Gibson and Middelbrook – who sustain this theoretical approach. In the second part, we expose two representative cases of state building en Latin America – Colombia and Argentina – in order to demonstrate that only the hegemony construction process allow us to understand the development of the conservative parties throughout the first half of the 20th century.
