Abstract:
This dialogue with Jorge Riechmann engages with some of the main ethical-political, epistemological, and affective issues posed by the contemporary ecosocial crisis. Drawing on Riechmann’s extensive experience in the fields of environmentalism, ecosocialism, and the environmental humanities, this dialogue overviews several levels of environmental negationism, the need to historicize environmental struggles, and the difficulties of confronting the implications of civilizational collapse. Additionally, we analyze the tensions between modernity, the Enlightenment, decolonial critique, and ecological rationality, along with the potential links between proposals from the global South and the global North, particularly concerning degrowth, living well (buen vivir), and territorial resistance. This conversation also brings to the table notions such as bio-mimesis, urban re-naturalization, environmental affect, and the symbiotic planet, so as to think about other ways of inhabiting the Earth beyond fossil-based capitalism and neo-extractivism.
Keywords: eco-social crisis, environmental negationism, degrowth, global South, ecological rationality, environmental humanities.
