Statement on the Use of Generative AI
Tabula Rasa journal abides by the Decalogue for the ethical use of artificial intelligence in scientific and academic journals issued by the Argentinian Centre for Scientific and Technological Information (CAICYT-CONICET), endorsing the Heredia Declaration.
This document provides a framework for ensuring the ethical, conscious, and responsible use of artificial intelligence in scientific writing and editing. To this end, it outlines ten principles and recommendations to regulate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the following areas:
- Authorship: should only be attributed to individuals who have made substantial contributions to scientific work, since AI-systems cannot be considered authors or co-authors, on the grounds that they lack ethical and legal responsibility for published content.
- Limitations: AI-use must be restricted to supporting functions, such as grammatical correction or graphics preparation. The use of AI to write key sections of the article, such as the discussion, interpretation of results, or conclusions, is not permitted.
- Transparency and Documentation: the use of AI must be stated explicitly and in detail (model, version, date, purpose, scope of human edition) in the authorship statement, as well as in the Method and/or Acknowledgement sections. No mention of AI shall be included in the list of references.
- Scientific Integrity: all information generated by AI must be carefully verified against reliable scientific literature.
Compliance with regulations:
Tabula Rasa complies with:
- The Heredia Declaration (2025) on transparency, traceability, and accountability in publishing processes. The Heredia Declaration: Principles on the use of artificial intelligence in scientific publishing See the link.
- Guidelines by COPE, Elsevier, WAME, and UNESCO for the ethical use of AI in research.
- Colombian ethical regulations on the use of artificial intelligence in academia, ensuring alignment with the guidelines by MINCIENCIAS.
This policy will be revised annually in order to add the latest regulatory and technological developments.
